For anyone looking for a sprawling desert getaway, Vrbo (vacation rentals by owner) has listed a modern nine-bedroom, nine-bathroom compound in Palm Springs among its top vacation homes for 2023.

The rental property at 282 W. Santa Catalina was the only destination in California that made Vrbo's "2023 Vacation Homes of the Year." The list includes Western homes in Arizona, Idaho, Oregon and Colorado. For Cabo San Lucas fans, there's the five-bedroom Villa Luna Nueva on the southern end of the Baja California peninsula.

The 7,000-square-foot Oasis Estate in Palm Springs was given a top vacation distinction based on user ratings and amenities, according to Vrbo. The house, built in 2020 on just over half an acre, has an assessed value of $1.4 million, according to property records.

The compound's average daily rent is $2,838, according to Vrbo. The property includes a pool and hot tub, a 45-foot putting green and a vintage trailer for glamping.

A guest from Austin, Texas, who stayed in the home in May said the "home is one of the best appointed and managed properties I’ve ever stayed in."

Vrbo required a four-night stay as we flirted with booking the Oasis between Sept. 15-19, which includes the premium weekend rate. The home comes with a $850 cleaning charge and a service fee of $1,134. With taxes included, the four-day stay at the compound was $15,117.75. (Divided by nine friends, that's 1,679.75 each.)

Or resourceful friends could pool their resources and buy an enclave near Bob Hope's famous house for $8.5 million or a historic modern home for $4 million.

A 5-acre property formerly zoned for industrial use in Upland will become a community of 64 single-family homes.

Landmark Co., a real estate investment and development company, paid $6.5 million for the land at 1400 E. Arrow Hwy., and is partnering with Century Communities to build Rose Glen.

Progressive Real Estate Partners represented both the seller and buyers in the deal.

"Although the land was zoned light industrial, the city of Upland had identified the area as being well suited for residential based on the adjacent uses and proximity to schools and other amenities," said Paul Galmarini at Progressive. "With the current housing shortage and California mandates to build more homes, cities across the Inland Empire are being very proactive to identify new residential opportunities."

Galmarini said the rezoning and entitlement process took about two years.

Rose Glen will feature two-story detached homes with two-car attached garages. The developers said they’ll fit 13 homes on each acre by the time the homes are completed.

Homes designed in Spanish Colonial and Santa Barbara architectural styles will span 1,540 square feet. Community amenities will include play areas, picnic tables, fitness stations and barbeque zones.

Grading is due to start in July with the first Rose Glen homes available in mid-2024. No prices have been determined yet for the homes.
