MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – A free collection of medications, needles and vaping devices will be offered Wednesday in Muskegon Heights.

The event includes giveaways of medication lock boxes and sharps containers.

The collection will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. May 31 at the Muskegon Heights Fire Department, 2715 Baker Street. It is hosted by the Muskegon Area Medication Disposal Program.

Over-the-counter and prescription medications can be dropped off anonymously along with sharps such as needles and blood-testing lancets and vaping devices. Vitamins are accepted as are pet medications.

Patient information should be blocked off of prescription containers. Sharps need to be sealed in appropriate containers prior to being dropped off. Vaping devices should not be disassembled.

Organizers of the collection event stress the importance of safely disposing medications, especially opioids, to prevent them from getting into the wrong hands.

Free lock boxes and sharps containers will be distributed while supplies last.
